So…this will be mildly amusing to anyone who remembers the “Chef-Boy-Ardee incident” at Village Circle a decade ago.

This weekend I decided to finally (no comments please) sand and prep that window over the sink for painting. Got it all sanded, and put filler into the imperfections last night.
Woke up this morning and decided to put the paint on it.

Taped it all up, laid out my equipment, sanded down the spackle from last night.
Grabbed my $70 plastic bucket of Turkish Brown paint, and as I have done a dozen times before, shook it to mix the paint.
As I’m shaking it though, a bizarre confluence of bad luck, physics, and the malevolence of an as-yet-unamed deity conspired against me. Which, in itself it pretty common in my life. It just doesn’t usually happen while I’m shaking a paint bucket.

Anyhow, the result of this meeting of forces was that the inner ring of the paint container – which is only snapped into place, not actually part of the container itself, and which strangely enough also holds the threading onto which the COVER of the paint bucket screws – somehow managed to snap out of the bucket. Yep. Clean out. With a cute little “pop”. A piece of fucking engineering brilliance, that is.

This wouldn’t have been so bad, except that INSIDE the container the paint was, thanks to my vigorous shaking, moving at a pretty respectable velocity toward me, and finding a newly created opening decided to EXPLODE out of the freaking bucket launching paint ALL OVER ME and a dozen feet behind me. There was paint everywhere. From the dishwasher to the refrigerator and into the entry hallway. There was paint on the hardwood floor leading out to the front door. The was paint IN my shoes. No shit, inside them. Happily, part of my head was protected by an old t-shirt I had tied around my face to keep the sanding dust out of my mouth, and hadn’t yet taken off, otherwise I’d probably have gotten a mouthful.

I swore. A lot. In several languages at once. Then I stood there for about 20 seconds, paint dripping from my shirt, face, pants, hands and assessed the situation. My assessment indicated a LOT more swearing was needed, so I took another 10 seconds to get that done. After that I stripped my “painted on” clothes off, had a really good laugh, and started cleaning.

The cleanup took about 90 minutes total. The attached picture shows it at about the 40 minute mark, after I had mostly cleared the floor near the sink and was working outward.

I’m still laughing a little about it. When you’re that unlucky, it helps to have a sense of humor about it.

Ok, what the hell is it with school busses that have to stop EVERY TEN FEET to pick up/drop off a child?

I’m not exaggerating here. Lately I’ve had the constant bad luck to be behind busses in the morning and afternoon commute. It doesn’t seem to matter how I vary my schedule within it’s narrow parameters, I still find myself sitting in my car, taking 10 minutes to drive 2 miles while the bus stops, opens the door, lets one – ONE – child off the bus, closes the door, drives forward 10-25 feet, opens the door, lets another child off, and repeats over and over.

I live in a rural part of New Hampshire (I guess that’s redundant). In places, homes are spaced pretty far apart, and I get that we don’t want the kids walking any real distance to a centralized bus stop.

No wait, I don’t. Why can’t kids walk? I walked to my bus stop every morning, for every year I was in school until I was old enough to drive. When I was really young, it was just down the street, still in sight of my house (and the houses of the other kids at that stop). As I got older, it moved 2 blocks away. I don’t recall it being a real hardship. I’m not suggesting they should have to go that epic a distance…but maybe 100 feet? That way the bus would only have to stop 1/5 as many times.

Anyway, rural aside, these drop offs were at houses in the middle of town. The families of these houses could practically look into each other’s windows if they wanted to. Do the kids really need door-to-door service?

Why am I even upset about this?

It’s annoying as hell if you’re caught in it.

It makes you late for wherever you’re trying to go – and not just me, but the 20-25 cars piled up behind me.

It’s a pretty significant waste of fuel. Think about all these cars stopping and starting every few feet (not to mention the heavy bus). It’s like being caught in Boston traffic, but without the benefit of a nearby bar or some guy washing your car windows.

It’s just stupid. Holding up dozens of people just so some 8 year-old can step off the bus into his front lawn, instead of walking 100 feet is a level of stupid seldom seen even in modern government. 20 adults wasting 10 minutes each of their time = 3 man-hours. Just so some kid can get to the TV faster. No wonder 90% of America’s youth are obese.

That 3 man-hours? Multiply that by every town this is happening in, every school day. We could put a man on Mars in the time we’re spending behind school busses.

Some idiot suggested to me that it was for the child’s “safety”. Huh? Really? They can’t walk 100 feet safely in towns so small that the two police officers haven’t ever seen an actual crime? I’ve driven down that same road on a Saturday and seen those same kids 3/4 of a mile from their house, walking to the corner store for candy, or whatever kids buy these days. Their parents clearly think that’s safe enough.

I know this isn’t the kids doing, it’s the dolts we elect to school boards and state legislatures. I’m sure it’s some kind of ridiculous law that we have to drop every child off no more than 2 inches from their front stoop. The hell with how much money and time we’re wasting. Don’t worry about balancing the budget or improving our schools, that’d require tackling tough issues. The “no child left more than 2 feet from their house” law only took 2 minutes to think of and pass into law. Whew. Break time!

But don’t worry, I’ve got all our problems solved. I came up with the answers in the countless hours I’ve spent stopped behind busses.

A couple of Sundays ago, I woke up about 4:45 to a loud sound. One of those hard to place noises that make you think someone is breaking in, you know what I mean? Of course, my first thought is “That’d be stupid. It’s nearly dawn (too light for a break-in) and…well…I have a gun in arms reach. And, I’m cranky when I’m woken up..or rather, whenever I’m awake.”
Not wanting to be uncautious though, I took said gun and walked downstairs in the dark to investigate. I find nothing, but hear a very odd sound from the basement. Like rain on the bulkhead. But it’s not raining. I’m still bleary-eyed and foggy, so “oh-oh” hasn’t occurred to me yet, just more of a “hmmm, how curious”.
Leaving the weapon upstairs – I figured it wasn’t a thief taking a piss in the basement, after all I have 3 bathrooms he could use – I turned on the light and ventured down. I turn the corner at the bottom of the staircase, and what do my wondering eyes behold? I have a fountain. Odd, I think, I didn’t BUY the fountain option with the house. Stealth upgrade?
The water comes into my house through the basement wall via black plexi-hose. It couples to a metal fitting and then to a water meter. The water meter couples to another metal fitting that transitions to the copper piping. This entire fitting (transition piece, water meter) had fallen off the copper pipe. It fell off. IT FELL THE FUCK OFF. (Picture attached).
This spun me, to steal a line from someone else, into a dimension of pissed off that I had never seen.
After testing to make sure I wasn’t going to be electrocuted (see the electrical box perched near my new fountain? I threw a puppy in the water to see if it would die) I got the water turned off. Attempting to reconnect the fitting to the copper didn’t work – it stayed on, but wouldn’t stop leaking. I figured the internal washer was hosed, because the copper wouldn’t properly seat and I needed to replace the upper fitting.
I spent the remainder of the day searching for a replacement piece to the upper fitting. Of course, it’s nothing they sell at hardware stores, you need a plumbing supply shop, so no joy there. I brought the piece home, took it entirely apart, and figured out how to reseat the washer so the copper would connect properly. Then, I used some parachute cord to tie up the big metal framework so gravity doesn’t pull it back off again.
Long story, short motto: before you buy a house, make sure the builders aren’t mouth-breathing idiots with hammers.
Unfortunately the pictures don’t show the plume of water, as I had already turned it off by then, but the wet concrete wall clearly show where it was splashing!

Last month I discovered this website, Swoopo (www.swoopo.com). It bills itself as “entertainment shopping”, which I take to mean shopping that entertains you, not shopping for entertainment related purchases.
Swoopo is an auction site, of sorts, but is unique in a few ways most of which are detrimental to the actual shoppers.

* Unlike say, eBay, Swoopo has a very limited number of catagories, and a very limited variety and quantity of items for sale in any given catagory at one time. Users cannot post items for auction – all items are posted by Swoopo, all profits go to Swoopo.
* There is no way to search for an item at all. You must browse each category and every page in the category to find what you want. This is made somewhat less painful by the fact that the items are so limited.
* Bidding costs money. That’s right, it costs you money every time you place a bid. In fact, you can’t bid at all until you’ve purchased a “bidpack”, which is a certain number of bids, for a set price. You can buy as few as 30 bids ($22.50) or as many as 700 bids ($525.00) at a time. No matter how many bids you buy, there is no discount. Every bid costs 75 cents. Every bid you make on an item subtracts a bid from your pack.
* Auctions have an extremely long live time. Every auction has a clock attached to it, counting down the hours/min/sec until the auction ends. However, the clock is completely meaningless, because every single bid that is made increases the time remaining on the clock (as well as increasing the price, of course, and costing the bidder money). So an auction with literally 1 second remaining on the clock can suddenly shoot back up to 30 minutes or more in the flurry of bidding activity that usually comes with the end of an auction. The acutal “will-end” date of each auction appears to be 30 days from the day it started.
This is really a brilliant money-making strategy. Take an item I am watching, a 13.3″ Macbook. When I saw it, the bid was at $20 with about 1 hour remaining on the clock. 12 hours later, the same auction was still going on, with 45 minutes left, but the price had gone up to $45 dollars. Still a steal obviously.
This was a penny auction, which means every bid raised the price by one cent, and cost the bidder 75 cents. So in the 12 hours that elapsed, there were 2500 bids which netted Swoppo $1875. Even if the auction ends right now at that $45 price, they’ve made a tidy profit on the BIDS (over $500), and it shows no signs of ending as people continue to bid the clock back over the 30 minute mark every few seconds.
If you’re using Swoopo and bidding on multiple items, multiple times (almost a given since the timer refreshes with every bid) you could potentially spend *hundreds* of dollars bidding on items, and never actually win an auction.
What’s particularly egrarious about this system is that not only are you paying to bid, but you’re paying for the item after you win it! The money you spend to bid doesn’t count toward the actual price of the auction – in fact, your bids raise the price of the item, costing you twice if you happen win!
In a real auction, you don’t actually spend any money unless you…you know..WIN. The auctioneer doesn’t charge you to lose, that’s robbery.
The winning bidder is possibly still getting a good deal. Even if this Macbook ends up selling at $248 like the identical auction that ended just before it, and the winning bidder took 300 bids ($225) to win, they still got the laptop at a $800 savings. This assumes they weren’t bidding on another identical item, hoping to win one of them.
The ripoff comes if you’re one of the other dozen or more people who also bid dozens or hundreds of times, at a significant cost, and walked away empty-handed. It’s compounded by the fact that you almost have to use the auto-bidder, unless you can be glued to the website 24/7. The auto-bidder is specifically designed to compete against everyone else who is also using an auto-bidder. The auto-bidders basically duel, each one raising the bid by one cent (costing you 75 in the process) over the other until all the bidders except one run out of bids. Left to themselves, coupled with auctions that DO NOT END as long as they are being bid on, the auto-bidder system can easily use up a complete $525.00 bid pack in mere minutes (with internet latency, I’d guess about 90 seconds if there were 3 bidders involved), and do this to multiple bidders at once. Holy crap.
Bottom line: unless you have money to actually just throw away, avoid this site. The odds are that you will lose the vast majority of auctions you participate in while spending hundreds of dollars buying bids. If you DO have money to throw away, I recommend lighting it on fire and using it to burn bugs with – it’s bound to be more entertaining than this “entertainment shopping” site. Pretty sure the only people entertained here are the people making the profit from the gullible bidders.

Right now it’s between this, and Evernote. I’m going to use both and see which works better for me.
